Given the group’s influence on music, N.W.A. is receiving the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammy Awards.
The Recording Academy said on Friday, January 5, that N.W.A. will be one of the recipients of this coveted award. It will be given out on February 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Gladys Knight, Donna Summer, the Clark Sisters, Tammy Wynette, and Laurie Anderson are among the other recipients in this year’s class.

“Presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording,” is how the Academy describes the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
N.W.A. will be honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making them the sixth Hip-Hop act to do so. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and Slick Rick are among the previous honorees. The first-ever Dr. Dre Global Impact Award was introduced by the Recording Academy last year. The man who bears the name was the inaugural recipient.

DJ Kool Herc will also be honored for his cultural accomplishments and broad influence, in addition to N.W.A. The 68-year-old will receive the Trustees Award. A “Special Merit” honor awarded to individuals who, in the words of Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., “reflect the rich diversity” that fuels creative communities.
“This year’s Special Merit Award recipients are an incredible group of creators and industry professionals whose impact resonates with generations worldwide, and the Academy is honored to pay tribute to them,” stated Mason Jr.
“As part of our week-long celebration leading up to Music’s Biggest Night, we look forward to honoring these trailblazers in the music industry next month.”
On Sunday, February 4, the 66th Annual Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
