Hollywood can be lacking in originality, but this is not a new phenomenon, and some cinema lovers have begun to notice how frequently studios create eerily similar films.
If you believe that Hollywood produces insufficient creative ideas, you are correct.
Studios have always been risk averse, and they simply do not want to approve projects that they do not believe have any financial potential.

That being said, as the expense of film production has risen over the years, they have began to tighten their purse strings even more.
If you can’t guarantee an existing market, sequel, or spin-off possibilities, you may be out of luck.
In addition, studios don’t appear to mind duplicating one other in order to earn a profit.
This phenomena is even referred described as ‘twin films’, and some individuals on social media have noticed how frequently this occurs.
Twin films typically appear within a year after the first film’s release and frequently have similar themes or story lines.

So, the easiest examples are the 2011 films Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached.
Other instances are Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down, The Illusionist and The Prestige, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and Observe and Report… you get the point.
There is even a Wikipedia article dedicated to the cinematic phenomenon, which dates back to 1913.
Some similarities are admittedly hazy or out of context, while others are spot on.
Some Reddit members were perplexed because they had never noticed this pattern before. Others weighed in on the reasons behind the phenomenon and why it is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
“The real answer: You can’t sit on the IP anymore. When you hear that another company is putting a comparable concept into production, it’s either manufacture yours now or become known as the aspiring also-ran,” another added.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as making a pitch to a studio.” Said studio is reminded that they already have their own script and elect to use it rather than pay for another,” a third wrote.
“It’s because when a movie becomes a project/expected hit/actual box office success, other studios are constantly seeking to bring similar projects to completion. These are the ones we heard about.”
In all likely, it is a mixture of all of these factors, but it is difficult to miss when you observe it.
