Whoopi Goldberg Claims That American Idol Contributed To "The Downfall Of Society"

Whoopi Goldberg has seen it all as a veteran of the entertainment world. However, the EGOT winner has been underwhelmed by recent US entertainment, particularly reality television.

While you may expect her to criticize The Kardashians or Love is Blind, the 67-year-old chose to criticize American Idol, calling it the “downfall of society.”

The View host made the remarks while filming the upcoming documentary: You don’t know who I am, Anna Nicole Smith.

The Netlfix documentary, which was released earlier this month in the United States, follows the late Playboy and Guess model as she climbed to popularity in the 1990s.

The video also mentions Smith’s reality show, The Anna Nicole Show, which many people have spoken highly about.

According to Deadline, Goldberg was included in this, with the Sister Act actor musing on Nicole Smith’s terribly short life and her existence as a tabloid figure.

During this time, the panelists discussed the impact of reality television and its stars.

In an unguarded moment, she told filmmakers, “You have Basketball Wives, Housewives of whatever, all the Bravo shows, giving you the impression that you’re doing something wrong because you’re living your life.”

As the discussion went, Goldberg highlighted her concern, stating that audiences watched these shows to “feel better,” adding that “people like to be judgy.”

While reality TV viewers may agree to disagree with the talk show presenter, she then took aim at one show in particular, calling it the “downfall of society.”

“I believe that as a society, we enjoy watching things to pass judgment on others. “I’ve always thought that the beginning of society’s downfall was with, what’s the name of that show?” she asserted, adding: “American Idol?”

Though this may be a touch harsh, the A-Lister continued to criticize reality TV, explaining how many series had sprung up in the recent decade.

“Once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amok with it, and it’s gone out of control,” she stated emphatically.

“They invited the public to decide who that person was, and I believe that once we did that, we began a cycle that we have yet to [break].”

While we like watching the latest season of Love is Blind, we can’t help but wonder if Goldberg is onto something.
