Last year, when Oppenheimer and Barbie (with Ryan Gosling singing “I’m Just Ken”) dominated the ceremony, the combined viewership of the 97th Academy Awards telecast on ABC and the accompanying live-stream on Hulu was 18.1 million, a 7.2% decrease from the previous year’s 19.5 million.

This is the first decline in viewership since 2021, when 10.4 million people watched for the first time after the outbreak.

In any case, the March 2 live event is the highest-rated Academy Awards in five years among the coveted 18–34-year-old demographic, and it is the most watched TV event of 2025 thus far.

Technical issues plagued Hulu’s first Oscar livestream, which shut down before the last two prizes—Best Picture and Best Leading Actress—were presented. Hulu ascribed the incident on the event exceeding its allocated time.
