ByteDance is fighting calls to sell TikTok. According to Reuters, ByteDance has until January 19, 2025 to market the program after Biden signed the bill banning it.

Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, denounced the measure as “unconstitutional,” telling viewers, “This is a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice.”

He later stated, “Politicians may say otherwise, but don’t be confused. Many of the bill’s sponsors confess that banning TikTok is the ultimate goal.”

According to Reuters, TikTok would prefer to shut down operations in the United States rather than sell its assets.

President Biden signed the divestment-or-ban measure as part of a larger national security bill that contains significant foreign and military aid to nations such as Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine. The fast action followed the Senate’s 79-18 vote in favor of the proposal, suggesting significant bipartisan support.

In reflecting on the bill’s trip to his desk, President Biden acknowledged its hurdles, saying, “The path to my desk was a difficult path. It should have been easier and arrived sooner.

TikTok’s legal battle against the divestment mandate highlights the high stakes for the popular social media network and its millions of users in the United States. As the issue develops, TikTok’s future in the country remains unknown, pending the conclusion of the court procedures.
