On Sunday night, Will Smith made an unexpected appearance onstage at Coachella alongside Latin pop singer J Balvin.

The performance was centered around UFOs, and Smith was costumed as “Men in Black,” even channeling his legendary character’s characteristic spectacles as they sang the title track from the 1997 sci-fi action blockbuster.

The Bad Boy actor’s appearance was brief, but Smith, who is no stranger to nailing a moment on stage, delivered a memorable performance, concluding the set with Balvin being dragged off stage by black-suit-clad dancers while Smith pulled out a “Neuralyzer,” the film’s famous memory-eraser device. Balvin actually returned for another song, a version of his classic “In Da Ghetto” with his dancers dressed as aliens with large green and black eyes.

Balvin, who like large, wacky sets, appeared on what Variety characterized as “a platform from beneath the stage, underneath a giant mock-UFO that looked like a cross between the evil spaceship” from Jordan Peele’s film “Nope.”

This is not Balvin’s first Coachella performance. His set in 2019 was memorable for kicking off the festival’s strong Latin music presence. Bad Bunny and Rosalía were among the budding artists who performed at the desert music festival that year. At the end of his set, Colombian singer Balvin expressed his pride in seeing and hearing so many musicians play in Spanish at the world’s largest music festival. Nowadays, it is more expected, with much of the credit going to J Balvin and his contemporaries, who continue to electrify Coachella year after year.
