Ice Spice, who rose to popularity in the hip-hop scene, is poised to make her acting debut in Spike Lee’s Apple and the A24-backed upcoming criminal drama ‘High and Low,’ starring Denzel Washington.

“High and Low,” an English-language version of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 police thriller, is Denzel Washington’s fifth collaboration with filmmaker Spike Lee, but it will be hip-hop sensation Ice Spice’s first acting role. A24 and Apple Original Films are working together on the film, which will have a theatrical premiere through A24 before going global on AppleTV+.

Ice Spice quickly became a household name thanks to her breakout track, “Munch (Feelin’ U),” and collaborations with Pink Pantheress, Nicki Minaj, and Taylor Swift. This year, she garnered four Grammy nominations, including for Best Rap Song and Best New Artist. Her debut studio album, Y2K, will be released later this year.

Apple Original Films released photographs of Washington and Lee on social media, announcing that work on “High and Low” had already begun. Ice Spice has also apparently begun filming on the film, whose script was created by Lee and Alan Fox.

The film is Spike Lee and Denzel Washington’s fifth collaboration (“Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” “He Got Game,” and “Inside Man”) and the first since 2006. It is also Washington and producer Todd Black’s latest collaboration, following their work on “The Equalizer” franchise, “Fences,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Todd Black will produce for Escape Artists, while Jason Michael Berman and Jordan Moldo will work on Mandalay Pictures’ production. Lee will serve as executive producer through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, while Mandalay’s Peter Guber will co-produce with Juniper Productions’ Matthew Lindner, Chris Brigham, and Katia Washington.

Kurosawa’s original 1963 Japanese film was based on Ed McBain’s novel “King’s Ransom,” which follows the financial ruin of a company after paying a ransom to kidnappers.
