Bally Sports said in a court filing yesterday that it has come to an agreement with its creditors to fund it through the 2024 MLB season.

After that, unless a new agreement is found with Bally Sports and its creditors, it will no longer broadcast MLB games, allowing the teams to find new TV partners with the least amount of negative effect on fans. The MLB and Bally Sports, formerly Fox Sports RSNs, may be ending their long-standing cooperation as a result of this report.

Although the judge must still approve this go forward plan, Bally Sports would be able to continue operations until the end of the 2024 season. After that, MLB teams would be able to find new TV partners before the 2025 season began, unless new agreements were signed.

Bally Sports stated the following in the court filing:

These steps allow MLB and its clubs the time to move to a new broadcast partner prior to the 2025 MLB season, as well as the clarification they seek in their objection over the future handling of their telecast rights agreements. Thanks to these steps, there will be less chance of fan disruption since the Debtors plan to carry on with their broadcasts through the 2024 MLB season.

Additionally, Bally Sports declared that its agreement with the Twins is ending immediately and that it will not be renewed. It will now be up to the Twins to find a new TV partner for their games. The documents also raise the possibility that further MLB franchises will be dropped prior to the 2024 MLB season commencing.

With this news, MLB teams can now begin their search for a TV partner in case Bally Sports is unable to continue operations after the 2024 season. However, there have been rumors that a number of teams have already found new television partners and are simply awaiting contract releases.

The fact that Bally Sports now only has a strategy to last through the 2024 MLB season adds to the uncertainty surrounding the company’s future. All NBA teams’ contracts with Bally Sports will expire following the current campaign. This could indicate that the MLB and NBA last seasons on Bally Sports are what we are looking at.

The Detroit Tigers, Miami Marlins, Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers were the MLB teams that Bally Sports has contracts with as of yesterday.
