Kimmel, 55, admitted that he was prepared to hang up his Jimmy Kimmel Live! hosting hat at the beginning of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike in May when speaking on his new Spotify podcast Strike Force Five with Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and John Oliver.

Kimmel said to his co-hosts on Wednesday, “I was extremely bent on retiring right about the time the strike started. Oh yeah, working is kind of wonderful, I now realize. Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which he has hosted since 2003, is produced and hosted by Kimmel.

Furthermore, he said, “When you are working, you think about not working.”

In response, Kimmel said, “I was serious, I was very, very serious.” The comedian also said that he enjoys taking the summers off because he is paid to do it.

Over 1,000 writers across television, cinema, news, and internet media are represented by the WGA, who have been on strike since May 2 in protest of concerns like fairer compensation, restrictions on artificial intelligence (AI), and higher residuals. After the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the labor union failed to negotiate a contract agreement on May 1, the union went on strike.

As a result, reruns of late-night programs like Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Daily Show were broadcast in their place.

The hosts of the show—Fallon, Meyers, Colbert, 59, Oliver, 46, and Kimmel—announced the beginning of their limited series on Tuesday. It will follow the hosts as they deal with “the Hollywood strikes and beyond.”

The comedians will alternate between facilitating conversations in each of the anticipated 12 episodes of this Mint Mobile and Diageo production. Profits will also be distributed to all late-night show employees who are unemployed.

A large number of movie and television celebrities have endorsed the WGA strike. A few well-known individuals who have been spotted with “Writers Guild of America on Strike” signs include Wanda Sykes, Pete Davidson, and Cynthia Nixon.

After failing contract discussions with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, SAG-AFTRA, the organization that unites the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, declared its own strike in July.
