NBC Has Renewed Jimmy Fallon's 'Password' For A Second Season, But Production Has Been Delayed Due To A Writers Strike

Password, Jimmy Fallon’s game show presented by Keke Palmer, is returning to NBC for a second season.

However, Deadline knows that season two of the show has been delayed due to the writers strike, with The Tonight Show host Fallon among those refusing to cross the picket line.

The series was set to begin filming soon on the Universal lot.

It is the second major non-scripted series to be disrupted by the writers strike; earlier today, Deadline reported that Mayim Bialik backed out of presenting the last week of season 39 of Jeopardy! due to the strike.

Password premiered on August of last year, with the first season’s episodes averaging 4.2 million total viewers. According to NBC, it was the most-watched summer alternative series premiere in two years and the number one new show of summer 2022.

The show was not among the unscripted renewals announced by NBC in March as the network planned its summer roster, which included America’s Got Talent, Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge, American Ninja Warrior, and LA Fire & Rescue, however this was due to Palmer’s recent childbirth.

In the series, contestants are paired with Fallon and other celebrities to compete in a game of words. Each hour-long episode will have Fallon as a celebrity/contestant team competing for cash rewards by guessing a secret password with only one-word hints.

Martin Short, Chrissy Metz, Yvette Nicole Brown, Tony Hale, Chelsea Handler, Heidi Klum, Meghan Trainor, and Jon Hamm were among the celebrities who appeared in the inaugural season.

Fremantle is producing Password in collaboration with Universal Television Alternative Studio and Electric Hot Dog. Fallon, Jim Juvonen, and Jennifer Mullin will serve as executive producers, along with showrunner John Quinn.

Bob Stewart developed Password for Goodson-Todman Productions, which is currently owned by American Idol producer Fremantle. The show premiered on CBS in 1961 and lasted over 1,500 episodes before switching to ABC in 1971. NBC resurrected the game in 1979 and 1984, and CBS produced Million Dollar Password as a primetime series in 2008.
