On Tuesday, Marilyn Manson suffered a significant setback in his defamation case against his ex Evan Rachel Wood.
The Westworld actress openly accused the shock rocker of being abusive during their relationship, which lasted from 2007 to 2010, in February 2021, and she outlined her allegations in the 2022 documentary Phoenix Rising.
Manson angrily refuted the charges and, in March 2022, launched a defamation lawsuit against Wood and her on-again, off-again partner Illma Gore.
On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa A. Beaudet invalidated crucial portions of the musician’s claim, actual name Brian Warner.
The charge that Wood and Gore impersonated an FBI agent by “forging and distributing a fictitious letter” was dismissed, as was the claim that they created a checklist for others to use when making abuse charges against Manson.
According to The Associated Press, Judge Beaudet determined that the rocker’s chances of succeeding on the claims were slim.
Wood’s attorney, Michael Kump, issued a statement in response to the announcement, saying, “We are very pleased with the Court’s ruling, which affirms and protects Evan’s exercise of her fundamental First Amendment rights.” As the Court correctly determined, Plaintiff failed to prove that his claims against her had even a remote chance of success.”
Howard King, Manson’s attorney, said he plans to appeal the decision, calling it “disappointing but not unexpected.”
“The Court telegraphed this outcome when it refused to consider former plaintiff Ashley Smithline’s bombshell sworn declaration, which detailed how women were systematically pressured by Evan Rachel Wood and Illma Gore to make false claims about Brian Warner,” he continued.
After Wood made her allegations public in 2021, several other women came forward with similar claims, which Manson rejected. Over the last year, the majority of the lawsuits have been settled, dismissed, or dropped.
