TikTok is used by a small but growing percentage of adults in the United States to get news. This contrasts with many other social media platforms, where news consumption has either declined or remained stable in recent years.

In just two years, the proportion of US adults who say they regularly get news from TikTok has nearly tripled, rising from 3% in 2020 to 10% in 2022.

The video-sharing platform has made a lot of money in the last year, and it’s especially popular among teenagers (two-thirds of whom use it in some way) and young adults.

Adults under 30 are the most likely to say they get news on TikTok on a regular basis. A quarter of Americans in this age group (26%) say they get news there on a regular basis, which is higher than in 2021 and 2020. This compares to 10% of those aged 30 to 49, 4% of those aged 50 to 64, and only 1% of those aged 65 and up.

More TikTok adult users in the United States are getting news there as well. Currently, one-third of TikTok users say they get news on the site on a regular basis, up from 22% in 2020. Nonetheless, TikTok users are far less likely than Twitter or Facebook users to receive news on the site.
