Irving Berlin’s repertoire will be represented by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) under an exclusive global publishing agreement.
As his ex-US catalog administrator since 2012, UMPG’s relationship with Berlin’s estate is strengthened by the agreement.
Over the course of his 60-year career, Berlin wrote more than 1,500 songs, ranging from ballads to Broadway scores, and was “hailed as one of the finest songwriters in American history,” according to UMPG.
Anybody Can Do, Blue Skies, Cheek to Cheek, Anything You Can Do, and other oldies from Berlin’s discography will be represented by UMPG under the enlarged deal. What Is The Ocean’s Depth? Today is a beautiful day, and I have my love to keep me warm. The song is over (but the melody lingers on), There’s No Business Like Show Business, Let’s Face The Music And Dance, Puttin’ On The Ritz, Steppin’ Out With My Baby, The Song Is Ended (But The Melody Lingers On), the all-time best-selling single by Guinness World Records, White Christmas, and more.
In support of the enlarged agreement and to “help achieve optimal value for Berlin’s legacy,” UMPG developed a new, unique website for the film and television business that highlights Berlin’s vast and illustrious back catalog.
According to UMPG, the website “smartly combines themed playlists and simple labeling to empower sync clients to find the ideal Irving Berlin song for every audiovisual usage.”
Additionally, according to UMPG, it will represent the Berlin estate in brand and social marketing initiatives.
The music publisher has also opened up specific social media accounts, such as a new TikTok page.
Berlin wrote the music for 18 Hollywood movies and 19 Broadway productions, including White Christmas, Holiday Inn, and Top Hat.
In movies and television shows like Home Alone, Titanic, The Simpsons, Spider-Man 3, and Downton Abbey, his music has been used. Berlin received numerous awards throughout his life, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, four Tony Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, and nominations for eight Academy Awards.
Lady Gaga, Frank Sinatra, Taylor Swift, Bing Crosby, Paul McCartney, Gregory Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Barbra Streisand, Michael Bublé, Cher, Diana Ross, and Celine Dion are just a few artists who have performed his songs.
