Bobby Caldwell, a blue-eyed soul music icon, passed away at age 71. The singer of “What You Won’t Do for Love” passed away on Tuesday night at his New Jersey residence while sleeping, according to a statement from his agent.

Caldwell reportedly battled sickness for years, according to TMZ. Caldwell had a ruptured ankle tendon, painful episodes of neuropathy, and was unable to walk for the previous five years.

Mary Caldwell, his wife, shared the following message on Twitter:

In 1978, Caldwell released “What You Won’t Do for Love,” which debuted inside the top 10 on the Billboard charts and helped his self-titled debut record reach double platinum status.

Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been "FLOXED," it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell

Many artists have performed “What You Won’t Do for Love,” including Roy Ayers, Michael Bolton, and most recently, Snoh Aalegra. Additionally, the song is used as a sample in Tupac’s “Do for Love,” which was published in February 1998.

In addition, the song was used as a sample in a number of other songs, including “My Soul Ain’t for Sale” by DJ Jazzy Jeff, “What They Do” by 8Ball & MJG, “If I Could Change” by Master P, “Triangle Ship” by Terrace Martin and Kendrick Lamar, “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” by Aaliyah, and others.
