NASA Publishes A Thorough Map Of The Impending Eclipses

Maps showing the locations of the sun eclipses in 2023 and 2024 have been made available by NASA.

The map and calculation of the location of the moon’s shadow during upcoming annular and total eclipses, which will be visible in portions of the United States in October 2023 and April 2024, respectively, were made using data from numerous previous NASA missions.

On the map, the purple ovals on the right represent regions where a total eclipse will be visible on April 8, 2024, while the orange ovals on the left represent locations where an annual eclipse will be visible on October 14, 2023. The ovals’ shape shows what form the moon’s silhouette will take as it travels across the United States.

Each oval on the map has a time noted next to it that shows when observers on the ground will be able to see the eclipse at that location. The eclipse will last longer at a particular viewing location the closer a person is to the center of an oval that is marked.

When the moon partially obscures the sun, a corona, or “ring of fire,” can still be seen around the edges. This is known as an annular eclipse. When the moon fully obscures the sun, a total eclipse happens.

A map of the path the moon’s shadow will take across the United States was released by NASA along with a map of the path the eclipses will take around the world and a YouTube video describing the path of the upcoming eclipses and how they will look to observers on the ground.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mapped the shape of the moon, and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission’s topographical data was used to chart where the moon’s shadow fell on Earth. With the help of information from NASA’s Navigation and Ancillary Information Facility, the positions of the Moon, Earth, and Sun were determined.

Using information from NASA’s Blue Marble, a collection of satellite pictures gathered by NASA’s Earth Observatory Team, the map’s color was enhanced. Also used were nighttime pictures from NASA’s Black Marble, which maps the globe at night.
