1-800-CHATGPT is a new way for people to communicate with OpenAI’s popular chatbot.

Users can access a “easy, convenient, and low-cost way to try it out through familiar channels” by texting it via WhatsApp or calling the U.S. number (1-800-242-8478), according to OpenAI on Wednesday. The company first promised free 15 minutes each month to callers.

The announcement comes after OpenAI released a flurry of upgrades over a 12-day release event. The formal launch of OpenAI’s popular AI video-generation tool, Sora, was the most noteworthy news.

In an apparent move to increase its advertising budget in order to expand its user base, OpenAI recently appointed its first chief marketing officer. The business launched a search function in ChatGPT in October, putting it in a stronger position to take on Google, Microsoft’s Bing, and Perplexity.

As the business competes with Amazon-backed Anthropic, Elon Musk’s xAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon in the quickly growing generative artificial intelligence market—which is expected to reach $1 trillion in revenue within ten years—all of this is a part of OpenAI’s aggressive expansion strategy.

In October, OpenAI concluded its most recent round of fundraising at a $157 billion valuation. A $4 billion revolving line of credit was also given to the business, increasing its total liquidity to almost $10 billion.

Users do not need to have an account to call the 1-800 number, but the business stated in a livestream that it is “working on ways” to link WhatsApp conversations with a user’s ChatGPT credentials.

During the broadcast, one employee stated that the tool was created “just a few weeks ago.”
