This week, Sean “Diddy” Combs won a tiny but significant legal victory when a court determined that notes confiscated during a raid on his detention cell must be burned.

Federal authorities raided the MDC Brooklyn incarceration center, seizing 19 pages of handwritten notes from the rap mogul’s cell. Prosecutors argued that the raid was appropriate, citing worries about Diddy’s alleged attempts to influence witnesses and prospective jurors while in detention.

However, Diddy’s legal team quickly disputed the search, saying that the notes contained privileged legal information and that their seizure was a breach of his rights. Judge Arun Subramanian heard arguments from both parties and ruled in favor of the defense.

Judge Subramanian ordered prosecutors to “get rid of them,” destroying all copies of the notes and prohibiting their use in the case until their admissibility is determined.

Prosecutors have denied targeting privileged information throughout the search. However, Diddy’s counsel described the occurrence as a violation of trust and an infringement on the rights of the Bad Boy Entertainment CEO, who is still mired in a high-profile legal dispute.

The raid and following debate highlight the extreme scrutiny Diddy faced while incarcerated. Despite this loss, the prosecution continues to argue that their actions were appropriate, claiming that Diddy has participated in wrongdoing while behind bars.

As the case progresses, this new finding adds another layer of complication to what is already building out to be a bitter legal battle.
