Lionsgate Television has optioned writer Adam Ciralsky’s recent Vanity Fair story on the work of the United States Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and plans to develop a series created by Alexi Hawley, showrunner of the Lionsgate show The Rookie, which airs on ABC.

Each season, the series will focus on a fabricated hostage situation.

“In just the past few days, we’ve seen this piece resonate with Vanity Fair readers globally,” said Scott Herbst, Lionsgate Television’s executive VP and Head of Scripted Development. “We’ve assembled a top-tier creative team to bring audiences a series inspired by the team that has impacted the lives of numerous hostages.”

Ciralsky and Gene Klein will executive produce the series, in addition to Hawley’s Perfectman Pictures and P3 Media.

“It’s an honor to create a show based on Adam’s riveting article, fictionalizing the high-stakes, exhaustive and emotional efforts to bring America’s hostages home,” Hawley said.

Ciralsky and Klein produce The Recruit through their P3 Media label. The company’s next feature documentary, Take No Prisoners, focuses on Washington’s efforts to liberate Americans taken hostage abroad.
