Russell Wilson’s latest season with the Denver Broncos may not have gone as expected, but life is still good. The 35-year-old quarterback spoke about his marriage to Ciara and parenting his children together, calling the experience a “gift.”
The Super Bowl champion appeared on I Am Athlete on Monday (Feb. 26) and discussed his thinking before beginning his relationship with the “One, Two Step” singer. “Right before I met [Ciara], I wrote out my five non-negotiables,” he added, explaining how he wanted a woman who had a relationship with God, was self-sufficient, and would care for him the way his mother cared for his father on his deathbed.

“And so I prayed about that […] I wrote it out actually on a napkin at dinner,” he told me. “Three days later, I meet Ciara. “When I walked into the room and saw little Future, who was 9 months at the time, crawling in my lap, it was like, ‘This is going to be my responsibility.'”

Wilson recalled a subsequent encounter with God in which he was reminded that being a partner and parent to Future — Ciara’s ex-boyfriend, rapper Future — would be his job. He begged God to confirm that this was what he wanted, and the Lord answered it was for him.

The hosts inquired if he was afraid to take on that challenge, to which he replied, “Not at all, but it was an opportunity. ‘Okay, God, this is what you want me to do?’ Stepping in to raise a child with [Ciara] and thinking, ‘Okay God, I know she’s the one.’ But I will also take on this obligation.” He believed he was prepared, and nine years later, they haven’t missed a beat. “What a gift,” he remarked.
Wilson and Ciara were married in 2016. They had three children together in 2017, 2020, and 2023, bringing the total to four, including stepson Future. While the public praises their relationship, Future Hendrix has criticized it.
“Big dawg status, bill hopper/ I ball in his mall for my brothers/ Goyard bag, tote the cutter/ I got it out of the field, f**k Russell,” he rapped on Quavo’s “Turn Yo Clic Up” in July 2023.
