Dwayne Johnson just made a “historic” seven-figure donation to a non-profit organization that is assisting actors on strike.
After SAG-AFTRA members went on strike on July 13, SAG-AFTRA Foundation president Courtney B. Vance and executive director Cyd Wilson wrote to 2,700 of the union’s highest-earning stars, detailing how the work stoppage could affect certain actors financially.
Johnson’s team then contacted the foundation to express his desire to help the organization’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program, and he ended up giving the largest single donation they’ve ever received.
“I’d like to thank Dwayne for his incredible generosity, compassion, and initiative in stepping up in such a significant and meaningful way for our community.” “Thank you, thank you, thank you on behalf of the thousands who will be helped by his historic donation,” Vance told Variety, stressing that the gesture will motivate “other folks” to follow suit.
“It’s the largest single donation we’ve ever received from one individual at one time,” Wilson noted. And what’s even more incredible is that one check will assist thousands of actors put food on the table, keep their children safe, and keep their automobiles running. And it’s not lost on me that he’s extremely humble about it, but it’s a starting point for us.
“We have 160,000 SAG-AFTRA performers, which is a large number of people who will require our assistance.” This donation is the jumpstart we needed in the first week of what we expect to be a long journey.”
