The first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon Bonaparte biopic, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has arrived.

The film, set to be released later this year, recounts the French president’s ascent to power as well as his relationship with Empress Joséphine.

The Joker actor will play the title character, and Vanessa Kirby will play Empress Joséphine. Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, Phil Cornwell, and Edouard Philipponnat also star.

According to the trailer, which features tremendous fight sequences, the film will be a massive event. Look at this:

The BAFTA-winning director, well known for his work on Alien and Blade Runner, directed and produced the next historical epic drama.

Scott has reconnected with screenwriter David Scarpa, who created the screenplay for the picture. Scott also acts as a producer alongside co-producers Winston Azzopardi, Raymond Kirk, and Janine Modder, as well as executive producer Aidan Elliott.

Napoleon also marks the return of Phoenix and Scott, who previously collaborated on the historical epic Gladiator.

When it was released in 2000, the action-adventure picture starring Russell Crowe was a major success, winning multiple prizes, including five Academy prizes, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.

“Napoleon is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless rise to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Joséphine,” according to the film’s official longline.

“The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.”

Filming began in England in February 2022, with sites including Lincoln, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, and others.

In the 2019 psychological thriller about the DC Comics villain, Napoleon follows Phoenix’s otherworldly interpretation of The Joker.

Napoleon was developed by Apple and will be released exclusively in theaters this Thanksgiving weekend, on Nov. 22. Customers with Apple TV+ will be able to watch it later.
