'Very Distressed' Robert De Niro Reacts To The Death Of His 'Loving Grandson' Leandro At The Age Of 19

Robert De Niro is bereaved over the death of his grandson, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez.

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of my beloved grandson Leo,” the actor stated in a statement to Page Six on Monday through his rep.

“We sincerely appreciate everyone’s condolences.” We would appreciate privacy while we mourn the loss of Leo.”

Drena De Niro, Robert’s daughter, confirmed her son’s death on Sunday in an emotional Instagram tribute to her “beautiful sweet angel.”

“I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly,” the 51-year-old actress and filmmaker captioned a throwback photo. “You have been my joy, my heart, and all that was ever pure and real in my life.”

“I’ll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama,” Drena said after admitting she doesn’t “know how to live without” the adolescent.

“You were so deeply loved and appreciated, and I wish that love alone could have saved you,” she went on to say. “I’m sorry, my baby… My dear baby, rest in peace and eternal paradise.”

The cause of death was not immediately determined, however narcotics and drug paraphernalia were allegedly discovered near Leandro’s body.

Drena’s son was shared with graffiti artist Carlos “Mare139” Rodriguez, who responded on her social media post, “words aren’t enough to express the joy he brought us or the loss we now bear with our families and friends.” He is now Godschild [sic]. On this full moon, his energy illuminates what was before invisible in the dark. Without LEO, you can’t spell LOVE.”

Other celebs, including Andy Cohen and Naomi Campbell, expressed their support in the comments area.

“I am so sad to hear about beautiful Leo,” the Bravo executive commented, while the model expressed her “heartbreak” at the “very sad time and loss.”

Drena is Robert’s eldest of seven children. He adopted her after marrying her mother, Diahnne Abbott, in 1976.

She also has son Raphael, 46, with Abbott, twins Aaron and Julian, 27, with Toukie Smith, and son Elliot, 25, and daughter Helen, 11, with Grace Hightower.

The “Taxi Driver” star confirmed in May that his partner, Tiffany Chen, had given birth to their seventh child. Gia is the name the couple gave to their baby.
