Elon Musk's Neuralink Brain Chip Has Been Cleared For Human Testing

The FDA has given Elon Musk’s Neuralink firm the go light to begin human trials.

It’s been a long road to this point, with a lot of work and tinkering to ensure the technology is safe to implant in individuals.

According to the Neuralink website, the company’s goal is to “create a fully implantable, cosmetically invisible brain-computer interface that will allow you to control a computer or mobile device wherever you go.”

“Micron-scale threads would be inserted into areas of the brain that control movement,” they stated. Each thread comprises several electrodes and connects them to an implant known as the “Link.”

“The Link’s threads are so fine and flexible that they can’t be inserted by hand.”

“Instead, we’re developing a robotic system that will reliably and efficiently insert these threads precisely where the neurosurgeon wants them.”

Musk stated that this type of technology would be fantastic for folks who are paraplegic and unable to use a computer mouse.

In an interview with TED’s Chris Anderson, he stated that Neuralink would be used to treat brain and spinal injuries “for nearly a decade,” as well as morbid obesity and other health issues.

The tech genius stated that they have been working hard to guarantee that the Nerualink implant is upgradable, inexpensive, and safe.

That last component is obviously the most significant, and it appears that they are ready to move forward.

According to the company’s Twitter account, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given them the go-ahead.

“We are thrilled to announce that we have received FDA approval to begin our first-in-human clinical study!” the company added.

“This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA, and it represents an important first step toward allowing our technology to help many people in the future.”

“Recruitment for our clinical trial is not yet open.” More details will be announced soon!”

There will almost certainly be a large number of people who want to be among the first to try the fantastic new technology.

Musk hinted in December of last year that Neuralink might begin human trials by the middle of 2023.

During a Show & Tell, he demonstrated how one of their test monkeys learned to control the cursor on a computer using only its brain.

The implant was so little that it was impossible to see on the video, but it enabled the animal to spell words and speak.
