After a car fire in November and a motorbike accident in January, Jay Leno is doing surprisingly well.
“I’m doing well!” “I’m fine,” the 73-year-old comedian said Saturday at a launch event for the debut of “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge.”
Despite suffering third-degree burns in his garage and breaking many bones in the bike crash, Leno appeared physically unharmed and lively during our conversation.
He’s “recovering” so well that he’s not even going to physical therapy anymore.
“No problem! “I’m fine,” he insisted, attributing his upbeat attitude to his ability to recognize his privilege.
“Look, when you’re in my position, when you’re any kind of celebrity, you’re luckier than most people,” remarked the former “Tonight Show” host.
“So when something bad happens to you, you can’t whine and complain about it because bad things happen to people every day — either they get burned or cut — and they don’t have the financial wherewithal I did.”
“So I just make jokes,” he explained, adding that “people love to see rich people catch on fire.”
“It’s also Hollywood.” You’re fine as long as you look okay. Nobody cares about how you feel.”
According to Leno, he has learnt to live in the moment because “show business is fleeting.”
“You have to enjoy it while you can, and it’s fun,” he said. “Some days you’re popular; other days you’re not.”
Despite his recent difficulties, the former “Jay Leno’s Garage” host continues to enjoy his favorite hobbies: tending to his huge collection of new and old vehicles and riding his motorcycle.
He said that his wife of more than four decades, Mavis Leno, is genuinely supportive of his continual high-stakes adventures.
“She’s fine as long as it’s not cocaine and girlfriends,” he joked.
Jay was chosen as a celebrity guest judge on NBC’s “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” due to his extensive knowledge of and unwavering passion in automobiles.
The reality competition show, which begins March 30, will feature superfans competing head to head to build the life-sized Hot Wheels of their childhood dreams.
