According to one specialist in the subject, the competition to produce better and quicker AIs could lead to tragedy, with a 50% likelihood of ending in ‘catastrophe’ with’most’ humanity dead.
According to Paul Christiano, a former major researcher at OpenAI, there is a strong chance that artificial intelligence will seize control of humanity and kill it.
He probably knows what he’s talking about, having previously led the language model alignment team at the AI intelligence firm.
Christano presently leads the Alignment Research Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to aligning machine learning algorithms with “human interests.”
He stated on the ‘Bankless Podcast’ that “I think maybe there’s something like a 10-20 percent chance of AI takeover, [with] many [or] most humans dead.”
He went on, “Overall, maybe we’re talking about a 50/50 chance of catastrophe shortly after we have systems at the human level.”
And he isn’t alone.
Scientists from around the world signed an online statement earlier this year recommending that the AI race be put on hold until we humans have had time to strategize.
Bill Gates has also expressed his concerns, comparing AI to ‘nuclear weapons’ in 2019.

In the absence of a compelling sci-fi storyline, how might AI turn against the people who developed it?
It turns out that everything is due to its life experience.
AI, like a human baby, is trained by being overwhelmed with data that it does not know what to do with.
Just like a newborn baby screams and learns that a parent is coming to pick it up, AI learns by attempting to attain specific goals with random actions and zeroing in on ‘right’ outcomes.
Machine learning can already provide well-structured, coherent solutions to human searches by immersing AI in internet data.
Many in the industry predict that, within a decade, computing power mixed with artificial intelligence will render robots sentient – which is where we may run into trouble.
That is why many experts have pushed us to discover how to manage AI behavior now, before it becomes uncontrollable.

Christiano isn’t the only one who is concerned about AI’s future.
Elon Musk stated in March of this year that he is concerned about AI.
“It’s a dangerous piece of technology.” “I’m afraid I may have done something to hasten it,” he admitted.
