Ed Sheeran Has Threatened To Stop Making Music If He Loses His Copyright Suit

If he loses his current copyright infringement trial, Ed Sheeran has promised to stop performing music.

Sheeran said he would give up music if a jury finds him guilty of ripping off Marvin Gaye’s 1973 soul classic Let’s Get It On with his smash tune Thinking Out Loud during his testimony on Monday in a federal court in Manhattan.

The 32-year-old was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying, “If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping.”

The singer-songwriter said, “I find it really insulting to devote my whole life to being a performer and a songwriter and have someone diminish it.” He also voiced his anger about the claims and their prospective effect on his career.

In addition, he stated that the prosecution was attempting to “diminish my success” and pointed out that Thinking Out Loud was responsible for his first Grammy Award.

The family of co-writer Ed Townsend of the song “Let’s Get It On” is suing the singer for $100 million (£73 million).

They assert that Let’s Get It On and Thinking Out Loud share “striking similarities,” including a similar chord pattern. These allegations have been rejected by Sheeran, who argues that his 2014 ballad is an original composition that uses well-liked “building blocks that have been freely available for hundreds of years.”

Sheeran previously battled for copyright over his song Shape of You in a UK courtroom last year. He prevailed there.
