The top players available on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, which begins on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri, are former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr., Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer, Alabama safety Brian Branch, and Joey Porter Jr. of Penn State.
Friday’s second and third rounds will begin at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network.
Thirty-one prospects ceremonially became professionals after the first round was finished on Thursday at Union Station. Bryce Young of Alabama was selected as one of three quarterbacks on Day 1, which featured six trades, the customary sharp suits, and genuine emotion.
Levis was frequently filmed waiting in the backstage green room by cameras as he was not chosen. The anticipated first-round pick must now wait one more in anticipation of possibly hearing his name called on Friday or Saturday.
The first selection in the second round goes to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The other clubs with Top 5 picks in that round are the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Arizona Cardinals.
The Steelers are getting inquiries about a potential trade for the No. 32 overall pick, which is the first pick of the second round, according to sources who spoke to ESPN and NFL Network. The first round of such offers began on Thursday.
The team would be open to trading the No. 32 pick, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters last week.
Last year, the Steelers took former Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick, and it’s unlikely that they’ll take a quarterback first overall this year.
The second overall pick in the first round went to the Texans, who selected former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. The Indianapolis Colts selected former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the first round, while the Cardinals already have quarterback Kyler Murray on their roster.
On Day 2, it’s unlikely that either of those teams will select another passer.
Among the groups that might be considering a quarterback are the Los Angeles Rams. The Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, and Las Vegas Raiders all have early picks on Day 2, so they may wish to choose someone at that position.
Among the other highly regarded quarterbacks still available is former Tennessee great Hendon Hooker. Some talent analysts anticipated Hooker to be taken seriously in the first round.
In March, Rams head coach Sean McVay told the media that he would be interested in a quarterback in the draft as a possible Matt Stafford backup. He claimed that the Rams wouldn’t necessarily have to select a quarterback in the first round.
You must have an open mind, McVay insisted. “Obviously, Matthew is the only quarterback we currently have on the roster, so we must be able to address that in some way, whether it’s through the draft or free agency. We therefore surely keep an eye on those aspects.
In the off-season, fellow coach Pete Carroll suggested that the Seattle Seahawks might be considering using one of their early picks to select a quarterback.
On Day 2, Porter and Branch are among the best defensive backs that are still available. Joey Porter, a former NFL linebacker, is the father of Porter.
Other cornerback candidates include Georgia’s Kelee Ringo, South Carolina’s Cam Smith, Kansas State’s Julius Brents, Michigan’s D.J. Turner, and Alabama’s Eli Ricks.
Branch received the highest safety rating in the group. The other top safeties on the market are Antonio Johnson of Texas A&M, Jordan Battle of Alabama, Sydney Brown of Illinois, and Jammie Robinson of Florida State.
Mayer was regarded as the top tight end prospect by many pundits, however he was passed over on Day 1. Among the other best tight ends available are Georgia’s Darnell Washington, Luke Musgrave of Oregon State, and Tucker Kraft of South Dakota State.
Teams will still have a choice between Devon Achane of Texas A&M, Zach Charbonnet of UCLA, and Tyjae Spears of Tulane at running back.
The best wide receiver who is still available is Jalen Hyatt of Tennessee.
The offensive lineman from Ohio State, Minnesota, Florida, North Dakota State, O’Cyrus Torrence, and Stanford that are still available are Dawand Jones and John Michael Schmitz.
The best remaining defensive lineman include B.J. Ojulari of LSU, Keion White of Georgia Tech, Isaiah Foskey of Notre Dame, and Adetomiwa Adebawore of Northwestern.
Trenton Simpson of Clemson, Derick Hall of Auburn, and Andre Carter II of Army are some of the best linebackers still playing.
Saturday at noon, ESPN, NFL Network, and ABC will begin airing third-day coverage, which will include the final four rounds of the selection.
