Mark Wahlberg and Johnny Depp reportedly “regret” passing on the chance to appear in Ocean’s Eleven, according to George Clooney’s joke.
Wahlberg and Depp both claimed they had been recruited for the role of pickpocket Linus Caldwell in the 2001 heist comedy during an interview with director Steven Soderbergh at the 2023 TCM Classic Film Festival over the weekend. Ultimately, Matt Damon was cast in the part.
“Steven received nominations for directing both the movies Traffic and Erin Brockovich, which he had just finished. So, Soderbergh remarked, “That said, some people did say no to us. People really wanted to work with Steven.
They did, Clooney remarked. “Some very well-known people warned us to f**k off. Johnny Depp with Mark Wahlberg. Others were present. They now regret it. I should never have played Batman.
In another part of the talk, Clooney made light of the idea of a tie-in between the Ocean’s Eleven and Magic Mike franchises, both of which Soderbergh worked on as a producer and director.
He joked, “Ocean’s Mike.”
