Over Easter, video game adaptations go wild.
Three decades after Hollywood’s first failed attempts to figure out how to turn popular video games into motion pictures, Universal/Illumination and Nintendo’s collaboration on The Super Mario Bros. Movie has broken all previous records in the category.
The animated adventure made an estimated $204.6 million in North America in its first five days, $172.8 million in 70 other countries, and $377.5 million globally. Estimates for the Easter Monday holiday are not included in these figures.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie not only broke the previous record for the opening of a video game adaptation, but also had the highest opening ever for an animated picture, surpassing Frozen 2 with $358 million.
The highest opening for an animated picture in the premium format on Imax was an estimated $21.6 million.
Warcraft set the previous record for a video game adaptation’s premiere weekend with $210 million globally, albeit that sum is calculated by aggregating the debut numbers from comparable regions that had staggered release dates in the summer of 2016.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie also had the highest opening of 2023, surpassing Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania ($225.3m), which came in second, by 68%. Aside from Minions: The Rise of Gru, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Sing 2, it is already the fourth-most popular animated film of the epidemic era. Universal is the company that distributes all four of these animations.
Mexico tops the list of foreign markets with an estimated $27.4 million (the third-largest opening of all time), followed by the UK/Ireland ($19.6 million), Germany ($14.0 million), China ($11.5 million), and France ($10.4 million). Following Spain are Australia ($8.3 million), Italy ($7.9 million), Brazil ($6.9 million), and Central America ($6.4 million).
The movie did very well in Latin regions; after Avengers: Endgame, it had Central America’s second-largest box office debut ever.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has profited by a 92-minute running time, which allows theaters to show it on each screen several times a day. Additionally, considering the Super Mario brand’s history, which dates back to the first Nintendo videogame from 1985, the movie may also appeal to generations of gamers in addition to families.

In addition to these benefits, the movie has clearly appealed to viewers; unless you count the Japanese anime Suzume, there are no other family animations in the current global top 10 chart. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is currently in its second week of availability, is the main rival for families.
Given the lack of anticipated blockbuster releases for the rest of the month, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is likely to enjoy a consistent run. With the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney on May 5, the competition intensifies.
