The Orange County District Attorney’s Office in California dismissed all domestic abuse charges against Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the well-known adult television cartoon Rick and Morty.
According to Kimberly Edds, a spokesperson for the office, there is not enough evidence to establish the case beyond a reasonable question, which led to the charges being dropped, according to NBC News. “Significant additional information came to light,” she continued.
Roiland was charged with one felony count of false imprisonment by threat, violence, deception, or deceit as well as felony domestic battery with corporal harm. In May 2020, a criminal charge was brought against him. Later that year, he entered a not guilty plea to both counts.
Roiland claimed in a statement shared on Twitter that he “always knew these claims were false.”
Although I’m relieved that this case has been dropped, Roiland wrote in her article that she was “still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process.” Most of all, I’m disappointed that so many people were fast to judge without having all the information and on the word of an enraged ex who was attempting to circumvent the legal system and have me “canceled.”
After six seasons, Adult Swim, the show’s network, dismissed Roiland, who provided the voices for several other characters in addition to the titular ones in Rick and Morty. Without him, the performance will go on. Season 7 filming, according to Adult Swim, started in January.
Roiland was supposed to show up for a second pre-trial meeting on April 27.
