John Amos, the legendary actor and famous TV dad from Good Times, passed away at the age of 84. His son, K.C. Amos, claims that he passed away in Los Angeles on August 21 from natural causes.
The Hollywood Reporter received a statement from K.C. Amos that read, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned.” “He had the purest heart and a heart of gold, and he was adored by people everywhere.” He is regarded as their TV father by many admirers. He had a happy life. His exceptional acting performances in movies and television will carry on his legacy.
John Amos amassed a career spanning more than fifty years. Amos, who was born in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, is most known for his role as James Evans Sr. in the ground-breaking television series Good Times (1974–1976). Being the first African American father on prime-time television, Amos was praised for his realistic portrayal of a working-class father adjusting to life in a Chicago housing project. He was the tough, no-nonsense father in the family.

Prior to Good Times, Amos demonstrated his versatility in humorous roles by playing the adored weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1973). He made a lasting impression in the Emmy Award-winning miniseries Roots (1977), which was based on Alex Haley’s book. In addition to solidifying his legacy on television, his portrayal of Kunta Kinte’s adult self won him an Emmy nomination.
Netflix Orders ‘Good Times’ Animated Series Amos was also successful in the film industry, playing prominent roles in films such as Coming to America (1988), in which he played Cleo McDowell, the proprietor of McDowell’s restaurant. In the 2021 sequel Coming 2 America, he played the same role.
Throughout his career, Amos consistently portrayed dramatic and funny characters in television series such as The West Wing, Two and a Half Men, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Known for his diverse talent and powerful presence, he became one of Hollywood’s most lasting actors.
