What happens when you combine the star of The Batman, the director of Smile, and one of the most terrifying cult horror films of the 1980s? Well, we will soon find out.

THR reports that Robert Pattinson is producing a remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s famous 1981 chiller Possession. Parker Finn, who is now in post-production on Smile 2, will write and direct the film.

For those unfamiliar with the original film, Żuławski’s West Berlin-set psychological supernatural thriller stars Sam Neill as a spy who suspects his wife (Isabella Adjani) of having an affair. Infidelity and marital strife are the least of the couple’s concerns, as their approaching divorce sets off a catastrophic cycle involving murder, doppelgangers, and, well, a full-fledged nightmare-fueling tentacled extraterrestrial monstrosity. On the one hand, it’s a WTF-moment-filled fever dream propelled by absolutely insane performances by Neill and Adjani; on the other, it’s a very sorrowful meditation on the breakdown of a marriage, created by a man whose own relationship was disintegrating at the time.

Pitches for the remake, which has piqued the interest of possible buyers such as A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros., have been extremely favorably received thus far, with executives excited by Possession’s “batshit” and “out there” tale. While it is unclear whether Pattinson will star in the project or serve solely as a producer, his experience with Robert Eggers’ cosmic horror The Lighthouse, combined with Finn’s talent for psychological terror as demonstrated by Smile, make for an intriguing (or should that be tentaclising?) prospect.

We’ll have more on Possession when it becomes available, but in the meanwhile, we can look forward to seeing R-Pattz in Bong Joon-Ho’s Mickey 17, which will be released in UK cinemas on January 31, 2025. If you haven’t seen the original Possession, what are you waiting for? Go watch it! You may have healed from *that* train scene by the time the remake arrives.
