Jimmy Carter attended his late wife Rosalynn Carter’s memorial service in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon, making a touching and unusual public presence.
The 99-year-old former president had been receiving hospice care at home until Tuesday’s event, having ended medical assistance in February due to his own health issues.
Arriving at Atlanta’s Glenn Memorial Church for a memorial service honoring the late US First Lady Rosalynn Carter is former US President Jimmy Carter.
Rosalynn, on the other hand, received a dementia diagnosis in May and was placed in hospice care a few days before she passed away on November 19 at the age of 96. A press release from The Carter Center states that she passed away “peacefully” at her long-time residence in Plains, Georgia, “with her family by her side.”
President Carter stated in a statement that accompanied the event, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished.” When I needed it, she offered me great advice and support. Rosalynn’s presence in the world ensured that I always have love and support from someone.”
For 77 years, Rosalynn was the wife of Jimmy, the 39th president of the United States. From 1977 to 1981, she broke down barriers as the first lady of the country. Their four children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, as well as a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, survive her.
The previous president and first lady created a cute saying they used to communicate with each other: “ILYTG.” They were lifelong friends who first met when they were still infants.
“‘You have my undying love.'” “I learned that from Rosa, as that’s what my mother and father used to say back and forth,” the 39th president of the United States told PEOPLE in 2014. Nowadays, every one of our kids sends or receives emails with the identical message, ILYTG. Usually, they merely write the initials.”
At the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex at Georgia Southwestern State University, a wreath was laid on Monday to kick off the memorial services for Rosalynn. Rosalynn’s hearse was escorted by former and present Secret Service agents when it stopped at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, as part of her procession.
After that, the public was allowed to pay their respects at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, where the former first lady was brought.
Jimmy was present at the invitation-only event on Tuesday along with Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Bill Clinton, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
The memorial service for Rosalynn on Tuesday was attended by all of the current first ladies of the United States, including Dr. Jill Biden, Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush.
A formal funeral ceremony for relatives and friends will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
