Robin Williams' Daughter Says The AI Version Of Her Dad Is "Disturbing"

Robin Williams’ daughter has said on social media that computer-made copies of her dad that look like him are “personally disturbing” to her.

Hollywood writers went on strike on May 2 to demand better basic pay and more stable work. They also wanted steps to protect themselves from the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced last week that a settlement had been reached and some decisions about the use of AI had been made official. However, the Screen Actors Guild American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which joined the walkout in July, is still on strike.

Since then, Zelda Williams, Robin Williams’s daughter, has used social media to talk about how important it is for actors to be safe and have power when it comes to AI being used in movies and TV shows.

The SAG-AFTRA is on strike, but why?

Well, like the WGA, they want their minimum wage to go up and for companies to be willing to talk about pay raises and giving actors a cut of the streaming money.

As the use of AI grows, actors also want certain protections to be put in place. For example, actors don’t want to be replaced by AI and don’t want their likenesses to be used to teach AI.

Williams has seen for herself how AI can “create/recreate actors,” even ones who “cannot consent,” like her late father, who played famous parts in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, and Night at the Museum.

Williams said in her Instagram story yesterday (Sunday, October 1) that she is not “an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI.”

Zelda went on, “I’ve seen for YEARS how many people want to train these models to make actors who can’t consent, like Dad.”

“This is not just an idea; it’s very real.” Already, I’ve heard AI being used to make his “voice” say whatever people want. This bothers me, but it has effects that go far beyond my feelings.

In the end, Zelda decides, “Living actors deserve a chance to make characters with their own choices, to voice cartoons, and to put their HUMAN effort and time into performance.”

“At best, these recreations are poor copies of real people. At worst, they’re a horrible Frankenstein monster made from the worst parts of what this industry is, not what it should stand for.”
