The UK’s Film & TV Charity has received an additional donation from Prime Video and other UK broadcasters as a result of an amazing 800% increase in grant requests from workers struggling with the recession.

As the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, and Prime agree to additional donations for the charity’s summer campaign, the organization has also increased its budget by an additional £500,000 ($636,000). As the difficult situation appears to be continuing, additional partners are anticipated to contribute to the overall pot.

The charity referred to the additional £500,000 as “unprecedented” and stated that the sector “faces critical economic conditions that could devastate the livelihood of professionals with long-term consequences.”

This is the first action taken by Marcus Ryder, the new charity CEO who will succeed Alex Pumfrey next month and who was previously employed by BBC News. Ryder is scheduled to talk this week at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

The organization decided to take action after’stop-gap grant applications’ increased by 800% in July compared to the previous year. According to the charity, the action was taken in response to “emerging evidence that workers across the industry are exposed to financial insecurity that can negatively impact their mental health, with a wide range of current and more systemic contributing factors causing a perfect storm for many.” Since 2019, the organization has documented the industry’s overall problem with mental health.

According to Ryder, there is a structural issue with the workforce’s financial resilience, which is what powers the UK production industry. “The rise in grants applications we have seen and the testimony we are hearing from production staff feeling the effects of a wide range of factors all serve to underline this problem,” he added.

Even before the current cost-of-living issue took hold, three-quarters of respondents in the charity’s most recent Looking Glass survey expressed concern about their future financial security, Ryder continued. The license fee freeze and slump in the ad market have reduced broadcaster budgets, and freelancers across the board have been complaining of a lack of work, which has been made worse by the ripple effects of the U.S. labor strikes.

Ryder continued, “We hope our partners and stakeholders will once again rise to the challenge and come together to address what is clearly the next significant pillar of our collective response to improve the wellbeing of everyone working in our industry. Just as they worked with us in response to the mental health emergency revealed by the first Looking Glass survey.

The nonprofit organization advised those with money issues to call its free assistance line or go to its website.
