Samantha Morton Asserts Harvey Weinstein Attempted To' Destroy' Her Career

Samantha Morton claims that Harvey Weinstein blackballed her after she rejected his “misogynistic” film.

During an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the English actress described her rocky relationship with the disgraced film mogul, who is presently doing time in prison for sexual assault and rape, among other offenses.

Morton, 46, said she was blackballed by the former Hollywood powerhouse when she turned down his love comedy About Adam, starring Kate Hudson and Stuart Townsend, in 2000.

According to the actress, Weinstein was delighted with her performance in the 1997 film Under the Skin and invited her to star in his then-upcoming picture.

“I said, ‘I don’t like it,'” the star remarked of declining the part. “‘I think the picture is very misogynistic, and I don’t want to be a part of it,’ she says. ‘You don’t say no to Harvey,’ said the casting director. It’s not to him, at least. I just don’t want to make this picture… and I had just finished Under the Skin with Stuart Townsend. It was simply uninteresting to me. I was quite courteous.

“I (then) received a phone call that said, ‘You can’t say no.'” The ‘no’ was not being heard. So they kept coming back with this character, and I was informed firmly, ‘You’re not going to work again unless you do this role. I’m going to make your life a living misery. You are not going to work again.'”

The Minority Report actress stated that declining the part lost her future work on Weinstein-produced productions. She went on to say that Weinstein didn’t want her in The Brothers Grimm, starring Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, because he thought she was “unf**kable.” Finally, Lena Headey was cast in the role.

“It made me wonder why he was anti-me.” Morton reflected before realizing it was because she had turned down the role in About Adam.

“I forgot about it because it was years ago,” she explained. “And then, all these years later, I realized that if Miramax or the Weinstein Company had anything to do with it, it was just dreadful for me… He had a motive, a profound reason, to just try to damage my career… He couldn’t, since I kept working, doing independent films all around the world.”

Morton recently appeared in She Said, a 2022 biographical drama based on the Weinstein probe.
