Jelly Roll: Music Has Gotten Me Through Some Of My Darkest Periods.

Jelly Roll has always turned to music at his “darkest moments” in life.

The 38-year-old rapper added that songwriting has been his “constant” in life and that he wants to add “hopefulness” to his latest single, ‘Whitsitt Chapel,’ which he spent 10 years in federal prison for various offences from the age of 14 to 25.

“I think at some point in life, everything in life has let me down,” he said on “Entertainment Tonight.” But music was always a constant in my life. When I didn’t have anything else, I had a boombox. I had headphones and a small radio with me while I was imprisoned. Music helped me cope in the toughest circumstances of my life, such as at my father’s funeral. Music was always there to hug me. So all I want to do is help people. I’m always composing songs to demonstrate to folks that it’s good to be a work in progress. It’s fine to meet yourself in the middle. But I also wanted to make sure that I incorporated hopefulness and tempo this time. I experienced several pace shifts. I wanted to be more upbeat and use major keys.”

The ‘Save Me’ singer, real name Jason Bradley DeFord, went on to say that he met a fan from his hometown who cited him as an influence and stressed that “billions of dollars” could never match that.

“No amount of celebrity or money will ever mean more than the lady I just saw in the parking lot from Antioch, Tennessee, and asking if she takes a picture and just told me her brief piece of her story and what she’s overcome in life and how I inspired that,” he added. You could throw billions of riches at me, but it would never have the same effect, that feeling I get when fans tell me the song helps them.”
