Tom Hanks was initially concerned that spectators would not care about Forrest Gump’s character.
During a recent New Yorker Live event, the two-time Academy Award winner recalled a conversation he had with director Robert Zemeckis in which he expressed concern that the 1994 film would be a flop.
“‘Hey Bob, I’ve got a question for you,’ I say. “Will anyone care about this movie?” According to People, the actor was perplexed. “This guy sitting on something in these ridiculous shoes and this cuckoo suit with a suitcase full of Curious George books and stuff like that.” ‘Are we doing something here that will make sense to anyone?'”
Hanks claims that Zemeckis acknowledged that the film was a major risk.
“It’s a minefield, Tom,” Zemeckis responded, according to the 66-year-old actor. “We might be sowing the seeds of our own demise.” Any stride we take could be a bouncing Betty that blows our nuts off.”
Hanks went on to say that Zemeckis taught him to have “faith” in what they were filming and worry about the rest afterwards.
“Bob Zemeckis – God bless him, I’ve worked with him several times – landed on the absolute truth of anyone who has gone forward and said, ‘We are going to commit something to film today, and eventually we’ll cut this into something.'” You have no idea if it will work out. “All you can do is have faith,” he explained.
The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Hanks, and Best Director for Zemeckis.
They collaborated again on Cast Away, The Polar Express, and Pinocchio in 2022.
