OpenAI, a San Francisco-based AI giant, appears to be on a roll. Following the release of the innovative ChatGPT and its later version with expanded features, the company appears to be preparing to launch its latest breakthrough.
As it is commonly known that GPT-4 is capable of generating responses in the quickest and most efficient method from natural language prompts, OpenAI appears to have moved a step forward and now revealed its text-to-3D model. The Shap-E model can convert text suggestions into three-dimensional objects.
According to reports, the latest generative AI tool produces considerably more accurate results than a similar tool Point E, which was presented by OpenAI in 2022. Following the success of OpenAI’s text-to-image generating program Dall-E, this is considered as yet another breakthrough.
What exactly is Shap-E?
The latest OpenAI tool was created to build fine-grained textures and complicated forms from text inputs. Shap-E can generate object outlines and relies on a feature known as neural radiance fields (NeRFs) to provide accurate replies. Surprisingly, NeRFs are used in virtual and augmented reality to convert three-dimensional pictures into photorealistic surroundings.
According to reports, Shap-E uses NeRFs in conjunction with conventional diffusion models to generate the shape and texture of an object based on text cues. When compared to Point E, the process using Shap-E is substantially faster.
Shap-E is now accessible on GitHub for free, and it runs locally on a PC. According to Tomshardware.com, setting up the gadget and getting it to run is a monumental undertaking. Shap-E, like earlier models, has a lot of potential, but its output is currently adequate. According to the assessment, the majority of outputs were low-resolution, and crucial details were missing. Text inputs resulted in either color-animated GIFs or monochrome PLY files that could be accessed in apps like Paint 3D.
Capabilities and application scenarios
Shap-E’s potential has apparently been proven by the business using examples such as a bowl of food, a penguin, a bonfire, and so on. These 3D models were created in seconds, allowing users to develop 3D files more quickly. Shap-E’s applications include movies, virtual reality experiences, movies, engineering simulations, and, most significantly, scientific study. While more accurate samples of Shap-E’s 3D output are awaited, the tool is hailed as revolutionary in the field of 3D modeling and rendering.
