Len Goodman, a judge on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars, passed away at the age of 78.
In the presence of his family, the former ballroom dancer and TV personality passed away on Saturday in a hospice in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. He had had bone cancer for some time.
In a statement, Jackie Gill, Len Goodman’s agent, said, “It is with great sadness that I announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78.” “A much loved husband, father, and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.”
When Goodman participated as the lead judge on the inaugural season of Strictly Come Dancing in 2004, he quickly gained widespread recognition in his native England. He served on the jury until his resignation in 2016.
From the show’s debut in 2005 until last year, he also served as the chief judge on the American edition of the celebrity dancing competition, Dancing with the Stars.
Goodman stated in November that she wanted to spend more time with her granddaughters and family in Britain. “I’ve been on the show since it started in 2005, and it has been a huge pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful show, but I’ve decided I want to spend more time with my grandchildren and family back in Britain,” she said.
Goodman began dancing at the age of 19 and went pro in his early 20s. Following his victory at the British Championships, he retired in his late 20s. He was a TV producer and the owner of the Kent-based Goodman Dance Academy.
Tim Davie, director general of the BBC, paid homage to the well-liked judge and said: “Len Goodman was a brilliant, friendly entertainer who was beloved by millions. He was likable and made people of all ages feel like he belonged in their family. Len was the driving force behind Strictly’s success. Both the general public and his countless friends and family will greatly miss him.
James, Goodman’s son, and his wife Sue are still alive.
