This Is America was initially intended as a “Drake diss” by Childish Gambino.
The 39-year-old rapper and actor, whose real name is Donald Glover, has admitted that his 2018 hit, about the Black Lives Matter movement and featuring a number of rappers including Young Thug, Slim Jxmmi of Rae Sremmurd, BlocBoy JB, Quavo of Migos, and 21 Savage, was meant to make fun of the “God’s Plan” hitmaker.
“[It] was a funny way of like doing [a Drake diss], but then I was like, ‘This s*** sounds kind of hard, though,'” he admitted to GQ magazine. Glover acknowledged in the same interview that he doesn’t think his career would have turned out the same if he had been selected for the “SNL” ensemble.
I avoided so many dangers, he said. The thought of appearing on “SNL” destroyed me.
