For the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, two legends of women’s rap will headline the 2023 Essence Festival. Megan Thee Stallion and Ms. Lauryn Hill will perform as the festival’s headliners in New Orleans this year, according to Billboard.
From June 29 to July 3, 2023, Essence Fest will feature performances by Hill from her seminal album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Following her 2023 stage debut at March Madness Music Festival, Thee Stallion will take the lead.
Wizkid, Monica, Coco Jones, Kizz Daniel, Doug E. Fresh, DJ Spinderella, DJ Kid Capri, DJ Clark Kent, and other performers will also perform at the 2023 Essence Festival. Additionally, So So Def’s 30th anniversary will be celebrated, bringing Jermaine Dupri and associates to the stage.
According to Hakeem Holmes, vice president of the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, “for almost three decades, the ESSENCE Festival of Culture has been an international and joyful gathering that empowers community throughout the global Black diaspora.”
“As we prepare to celebrate the ’50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop,’ we could not think of a better way to honor the contributions that genre has made to global culture and the impressions that these artists and their extensive musical catalogs, which we are all so familiar with, have been ingrained into the fabric of our daily lives,” Holmes continued.
Soon, more artists will be announced. More information and the complete statement are available here.
