Cheech Marin And Tommy Chong Are Set To Star In A Biopic Of Cheech And Chong

A Cheech & Chong biopic penned by a team of Ren & Stimpy veterans is coming shortly from Oscar winning producer Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures, the studio said Wednesday.

Together with Underground, Five All in the Fifth Entertainment, and Cheech & Chong — Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong — Hidden Pictures will work on the unnamed Cheech & Chong project. It will be directed by Kristian Mercado, whose film If You Were the Last recently made its SXSW debut, and written by Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan (the upcoming K-Pop: Demon Hunters).

We can not wait to share with the world how two guys from very different backgrounds came together, transformed comedy, and popularized marijuana. Cheech & Chong said.

Changing Comedy with Cheech and Chong
“A look at the origin of this iconic comedy duo, and how they both came together to change comedy and stoner culture forever,” is how Hidden Pictures characterizes the Cheech & Chong biopic.

Together with Trevor Engelson (Snowfall) and Douglas Banker (The After Party, Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James) of Underground and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment, Lieberman and Alex Young (Wonder, Rescue Rangers, Stronger) of Hidden Pictures will produce the film.

David Glickman and Cheech & Chong will collaborate on the executive producing. Recently, Lieberman and Young collaborated with Cheech Marin on Amazon’s Shotgun Wedding, which stars Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Lopez.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong gained enormous popularity as comedians in the late 1970s and early 1980s thanks to a string of successful films, including Up in Smoke in 1978, Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie in 1980, and Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams in 1981. They capitalized on their comic personas as loving, everyday bumblers driven by the desire to find their next fix.

Trevor Engelson commented, “Working with Cheech and Chong has always been a dream of mine. Since I grew up listening to my father’s copies of their CDs, it is a tremendous honor to assist in sharing their amazing true tale with a new audience of admirers.

Jiminez and McMechan are working on their film Luna Likes with MACRO in addition to writing K-Pop Demon Hunters for Sony Pictures Animation. This is because it was mentioned on The Black List’s first Latinx List. They contributed as writers on the Comedy Central revival of Ren & Stimpy.
