TikTok revealed on Tuesday that it now has more than 150 million monthly active users in the U.S., up from 100 million a year ago, as its CEO gets ready to testify before Congress this week.
With Congress and the Biden administration appearing open to an outright ban of TikTok in the U.S., or perhaps a forced sale, the social video platform’s explosive growth comes as it faces an existential threat (Snapchat, with a years-long head start, claims it has about 150 million users in North America).
In an effort to garner support from the general public and highlight how a ban would affect common people, TikTok’s newsroom post on Tuesday concentrated on the users and companies that use the app.
The business claims that it now has a presence in almost half of the world’s people and is a partner to 5 million companies. Of course, there are also the 7,000 TikTok workers in the United States.
The business stated that “this milestone comes at a crucial time for TikTok.” The 150 million Americans who have adopted TikTok have expressed worry about the possible banning of our platform, which would have a negative impact on all of them. By enhancing protections for our American users, we have taken unprecedented measures to proactively address U.S. national security concerns.
Politicians are worried about data sharing with Chinese officials, claims that Chinese citizens have spied on American journalists or gathered information about them, and the possibility that TikTok will be used to spread Chinese propaganda. The Chinese business ByteDance owns TikTok.

As its CEO Shou Chew gets ready to appear before the House Energy & Commerce Committee on Thursday, TikTok is playing games to highlight its size. Chew will be giving his first testimony since taking over the business almost two years ago.
Despite the company’s attempts to address U.S. concerns (such as the construction of a data center in the country to house all user data from Americans), the unusual partnership between the Biden administration and Congress raises the possibility that TikTok’s problems may still be far from resolved.
