Disney Is Now Working On New Frozen, Toy Story, And Zootopia Sequels

Elsa, Buzz Lightyear, and Judy Hopps are still alive.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the company is working on new sequels for the Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia properties during a quarterly earnings call on Wednesday.

We’ll have more information on these productions to share with you soon, but for now, this is a great illustration of how we’re using our industry-leading brands and franchises, Iger said investors.

Disney’s decision to return some of its most popular animated films is not particularly surprising given that Frozen, Toy Story, and Zootopia were all enormous commercial and critical successes. One of Disney’s biggest success stories is Frozen, which debuted in 2013 and has since produced a billion-dollar sequel, a Broadway stage production, theme park attractions, and more. Nevertheless, Toy Story has remained a Disney/Pixar classic over the years, from the 1995 original to the spin-off Lightyear released last year. (Sequels like Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 each made over a billion dollars in box office receipts.)

The animated movie Zootopia doesn’t yet have a sequel. However, the first movie was a big success, earning $1.025 billion worldwide and inspiring a Disney+ spin-off series.

Some of Disney’s more recent animated original productions, though, haven’t done as well. The most recent film from the studio, Strange World, came out in theaters in November and only made a pitiful $74 million worldwide. Other originals have had mediocre box office returns only to succeed more on streaming. (The movie Encanto serves as a wonderful illustration; it made $257 million at the box office before breaking through on Disney+.)

Iger also disclosed 7,000 job losses at Disney as part of a drive to find $5.5 billion in savings throughout the corporation during the investor call. Iger left the Mouse House several years ago and gave Bob Chapek the keys, but he recently returned.

Iger also informed investors about plans to bring James Cameron’s Avatar to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, on the theme park side. The new attraction will undoubtedly be comparable to the Pandora experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando, however specifics have not yet been made public.
