At Twitter, Elon Musk keeps making changes at a dizzying pace. On Saturday, the still-CEO (I assume he hasn’t found anyone else to take over?) appeared to address customer complaints that the platform’s advertising are growing worse.
Musk stated that Twitter adverts were being displayed too frequently and taking up too much space, and that the social network will be “taking steps” to rectify this. Finally, Musk reaffirmed that a new, more expensive membership tier that will completely eradicate adverts is also coming.
Since at least the debut of the original premium membership for Twitter, which gave users access to a variety of services but did nothing to alter the frequency at which they saw advertisements on the platform, users have been expressing a desire for a paid option to completely remove adverts. Midway through December of last year, Musk hinted that a higher tier subscription that was completely ad-free might be available in 2023. At the time, Musk said that Blue subscribers will only see half as many advertisements as non-subscribers.
Musk’s admission of the appalling status of Twitter’s advertisements came just after he oversaw the termination of the network’s support for third-party users. Beginning last week, Twitter abruptly revoked access for the biggest clients, including Tweetbot and Twitterific. Later this week, Twitter amended its developer guidelines to completely revoke access for all such clients.
