Tyler Perry Takes On The 6888TH Battalion's True Story

The cast of Tyler Perry’s next film “Six Triple Eight” includes Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey. Netflix will release the period piece on World War II’s only all-Black, all-women brigade.

Along with Washington and Winfrey, the film’s stellar cast includes Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Jay Reeves, Jeanté Godlock, Moriah Brown, Baadja-Lyne Odums, and Gregg Sulkin, as well as Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, and Susan Sarandon.

Washington will co-produce the picture with filmmaker and producer Tyler Perry. Perry was inspired to write the screenplay after reading an essay by Kevin M. Hymel in Sovereign Media’s WWII History Magazine. Perry, Nicole Avant for Her Excellency Productions, Kerlota Espinosa for Intuition Productions, Carlota Espinosa, Angi Bones, and Tony Strickland for Tyler Perry Studios are also producing. The project is executive produced by Peter Guber of Mandalay Pictures and Washington.

For nearly 75 years, the account of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion, which consisted of 855 Black women, has been removed from school textbooks, concealing an astounding story of immense value. When these ladies joined the war effort, they were tasked with going through, repairing, and delivering the three-year backlog of mail.

“Facing discrimination, strange geography, and a war-torn country, they persevered and sorted over 17 million pieces of mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their families and loved ones back home,” according to the film’s synopsis. The 6888’s motto kept them going every day: ‘No Mail, Low Morale.’ The women of the 6888 weren’t just carrying mail, they were bringing hope.”

President Joe Biden signed legislation granting the women the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest honor, on March 14, 2022.

Tyler Perry’s fourth Netflix feature, “Six Triple Eight,” was directed by him. Previous albums include “A Madea Homecoming,” “A Fall From Grace,” and “A Jazzman’s Blues.” The film’s release date was formally revealed in December and teased in August 2022 by Variety. According to Perry, the film will highlight “some wonderful characters that were forgotten for years.” The film’s production officially began earlier this week.
