On December 31, nearly every major network broadcast live from New York City to bring in the new year. If you were at home ringing in 2023, you might want to pay particular attention to CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest. Cohen has given his side of the story after Seacrest said this week that he didn’t say hello to him during their dueling shows on New Year’s Eve 2022.

On Tuesday, as they were both putting on their respective New Year’s Eve shows, Ryan Seacrest said that Andy Cohen, who was standing barely 10 feet away from him, “did not turn around” to greet him in the thick of the celebration. On his Radio Andy program, Andy Cohen addressed it as follows:

Ryan, I don’t know, he’s got a bug up on me two weeks in a row… I don’t even know what I, I didn’t see Anderson turn around and wave. Usually what Anderson will do, and I should, I should call him back and ask him about this, frankly. But I think he’ll yell at me if I do… usually if he’s waving at Ryan, he’ll say to me, ‘Hey, there’s Ryan.’ You know what I mean? Yeah. And then I’ll turn around and wave or I’ll say, ‘There’s Ryan,’ but he didn’t do that.

Andy Cohen asserted that he never noticed Ryan Seacrest and inadvertently placed some of the blame for this on his co-host Anderson Cooper, who he felt should have informed him when Ryan Seacrest waved so that he could turn around and reciprocate. Cooper mouthed “have a good show” to Seacrest on Tuesday while he didn’t contact with Cohen, according to Seacrest’s remarks made while speaking with Kelly Ripa on their joint morning program.

Additionally, Seacrest revealed that Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen could see him on stage and that he had been attempting to grab their attention throughout commercial breaks. According to reports, the shows often take a commercial break at the same time, but this year they didn’t, giving viewers the option to select between the two shows that were broadcast on New Year’s Eve 2022.

Cohen then made the decision to call Anderson Cooper about the situation during Cohen’s radio show on Wednesday morning. Cooper didn’t seem too happy about getting him “involved” in “a thing with Seacrest.” Cooper responded as follows when Cohen questioned him about how he failed to attract Cooper’s attention while Seacrest was standing behind him:

Yeah, you didn’t know… I just happened to turn, there were a couple times I looked to see if he was around and there was one time I turned and he was there over by where they do that hourly countdown. So, I saw him and we both waved and I said ‘have a great new year’ or ‘have a great show.’ You were involved in some producing thing, so I just didn’t. I mean it all happened so fast and it wasn’t a big deal. I just assumed maybe you had [said hi] maybe previously and I was just catching up.

All indications point to a simple misunderstanding between Andy Cohen and Ryan Seacrest, with Cohen allegedly failing to notice the veteran New Year’s Eve host and Seacrest believing Cohen purposefully failed to greet him. Cohen also made fun of the fact that throughout the entire process, he was more concerned with getting Duran Duran’s attention than Seacrest.
