Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, are heavily investing in the “deepfake” industry.

The two have established a new business called Deep Voodoo from their Park County holding company in an effort to develop a new platform for deepfake technology incorporation by producers, musicians, and other members of the industry.

$20 million was raised for Deep Voodoo in a fresh round of fundraising that was headed by Connect Ventures, a joint venture between CAA and venture capital company New Enterprise Associates.

Deepfakes replace the faces of characters by using machine learning and artificial intelligence. The technology was previously employed by Stone and Parker in their Sassy Justice web series, which made fun of Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump, and other figures. This year, Deep Voodoo technology was used in a music video by Kendrick Lamar.

Stone stated in a statement, “We stumbled onto this fantastic technology and wound up hiring the best deepfake artists in the world. We are thrilled to introduce the Hollywood creative community to their genius.

“Deep Voodoo has established itself as a top synthetic media technology platform that has already impacted traditional entertainment,” continued Michael Blank of Connect Ventures. Artificial intelligence is used by Deep Voodoo to support projects in creative ways that are quicker and more affordable than standard VFX technologies.

Deep Voodoo was formerly a part of Park County, which also includes South Park, The Book of Mormon, Casa Bonita, and other ventures. However, it is now being spun off as a separate company, with the Connect Ventures capital round serving as its first external financing.
