50 Cent Turned Down $1.3 Million Record Deal From Universal Music Group

In an effort to avoid rival Irv Gotti damaging his career, 50 Cent once declined a seven-figure recording deal with Universal Music Group.

The 47-year-old discussed how his resistance affected his choice to reject the hefty offer that arrived during the intense bidding war he started in 2002 in a recent interview.

In relation to earlier statements made by the founder of Murder Inc, Fif remarked, “Irv [Gotti] was talking in the interview and he was talking how he was blocking me.” He appeared to be blocking everything, I put him in a good situation, he claimed. And it simply exploded. And I observed the instances where he believed he was blocking me at the time but I did not feel that way. But I wouldn’t conduct business with someone who had close ties to or any control over the solutions they had that were effective.

However, according to Fif, UMG was originally unaffected by his reluctance and made the mixtape veteran a signing offer of up to $1 million. They offered me $1,000,000 to record a G-Unit and solo album at Universal, but I politely declined the offer, he says.

“[Tony] Yayo was confused and asked, “What?” You’re not going to do it for a million, what? That would be like saying, “We won the lottery, but you’re not picking up the ticket.” It’s in the Universal system, so I say, “Nah, it’s not the correct thing.” Def Jam and those individuals were already profitable thanks to that system. where they could have access to anything I was doing and affect it.”

Irv Gotti acknowledged his attempts to blacklist 50 Cent and G-Unit in the early 2000s when he made an interview on Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 in 2020. He spoke with radio host B. High about his attempts to sabotage his fellow Queens native’s ascent to fame.

“I blocked the nia until he fell into Em and Dre’s lap,” Gotti said at the time. “Labels would call me. And I was so hot with — I was just the hottest thing. So I’d be like, ‘Yo, if you fk with him, I ain’t fkin’ with you.’ And they’d be like, ‘We ain’t fkin’ with him then, Gotti. Forget it.’” He continued, adding, “I should’ve let some of the bullsht a* labels, or not bullsht labels, but just not labels with Em and Dre behind ’em. He had a deal with Sony before. It wasn’t movin’ like that. I block that ni*a into a dream situation.”
